Crylla Valley Cottages Adopt Billy the Capuchin

Self catering cottage company, Crylla Valley Cottages, located just outside of Plymouth has adopted Billy, the capuchin monkey, at Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary is the flagship project of leading primate welfare charity, Wild Futures.  It rescues monkeys from the primate pet trade – a trade that has escalated over recent years.  It carries out much needed rescue and rehabilitation work with monkeys, many who are damaged either physically or mentally due to their time kept as pets.  It offers a home for life to all the monkeys that reside there, one being Billy.

Billy was smuggled into the UK from Eastern Europe and kept in a London flat until early 2012 when he was confiscated and brought to Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary.  He is a young, playful monkey who enjoys foraging in the sunshine.  He has settled into Sanctuary life wonderfully over the past year, making lots of monkey friends.

Wild Futures aims to protect primates and habitats worldwide.  As well as the Monkey Sanctuary, it supports various projects overseas centred on primate protection and welfare.  The charity launched its corporate adoption scheme last year as a way for companies to support its vital work.

The team at Crylla Valley Cottages selected young capuchin Billy as their chosen monkey after a member of the Crylla marketing team spent time at The Monkey Sanctuary taking part in a ‘Keeper for a day experience’.

Anne Bambrick of Crylla Valley Cottages states:  “The Monkeys all have a different story but one thing they all have in common is that they have all been victims of abuse whether their previous owners  meant to or not.  Monkeys need the company of their own kind and space to live.  At The Monkey Sanctuary at Looe they give the chance for these great characters to be what they should be!  Adopting a monkey like Billy is a great way for Crylla Valley to support such a worthy charity.”

Hayley Dann of Wild Futures stated: “We are thrilled that Crylla Valley Cottages has joined our troop and adopted Billy as their chosen monkey.  The corporate adoption scheme is a great way for companies to support our charity in a mutually beneficial way.  We particularly need businesses to support our work at present, due to the increased demand for our rescue and rehabilitation services.  We estimate that there are at least 5,000 monkeys being kept as pets in the UK and we receive calls on a regular basis to rescue more, but we cannot take on a new monkey until we have secured a certain level of funding.  We hope that more companies will follow suit and adopt a monkey so that we can save more primates in need.”
