World Oceans Day Goes Down a Storm!

World Oceans Day Goes Down a Storm!

The Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary based near Looe, Cornwall held a successful day last week to celebrate World Oceans Day.

On Thursday 7th June, despite the stormy weather, more than 160 people attended the World Oceans Day event and had a great time.  Several marine conservation group volunteers joined the Sanctuary staff to organise activities and talks centred on the Ocean theme.  Activities included making origami whales, ‘oceans on a plate’ and more.  In addition, two professional divers from Aquanauts in Plymouth delivered a talk on how diving can play an important role in conservation.  Visitors also learnt about the ocean perils shark-finning and ocean debris.

Local school children from Downderry got involved in the lead up to the event and made a huge turtle out of plastic bags.  The turtle was designed to highlight the growing issue of turtles swallowing plastic bags, mistaken as jellyfish.

Katie Timmins, Education Officer and organiser of the day stated: “Visitors really loved getting involved in the World Oceans Day activities.  It was a great way to educate and raise awareness of ocean conservation.  We are very grateful to the other local conservation groups for their involvement and of course proud of local students from Downderry school for the fantastic turtle that they produced.”
