Endangered Barbary macaques
Sign the petition to encourage EU & Moroccan authorities to better enforce existing laws to put an end to the trade in Barbary macaques.
The number of Barbary macaques remaining in the wild would only be able to populate a small fishing village in Cornwall. There are said to be fewer Barbary macaques left in the wild than there Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutans.
Issues:
- Illegal live trade in infant macaques from Morocco to Europe (approx 300 a year)
- Due to high numbers and crowed rescue facilities, wild-caught macaques are frequently being euthanized in France, where the problem is largest
Unique qualities:
- Only African primate found north of the Sahara desert (Morocco and Algeria)
- Otherwise known as “Barbary apes”, there is a free-ranging population of Barbary macaques at Gibraltar in Europe
- Only species of the genus Macaca that can be found outside of Asia
- Adaptable – can live in very cold and very warm weather conditions.
This petition urges EU and Moroccan authorities to better enforce existing laws to put an end to this trade, and also to better protect Barbary macaque habitats.. Thank you for your support!!
