Grass-roots conservation in South America
This year, you have helped us to fund projects that protect primates in
- South America
- Asia
- Africa
The Neotropical Primate Conservation Charity (NPC) were one of the worthy projects we selected in South America. Their work consists of
- Educating children and adults through classroom learning
- Presenting nature documentaries to encourage local support of conservation work
- The development of 2 community run conservation reserves, protecting a number of endangered species, which spans over an area approximately 4 x the size of Wales in an area threatened with widespread deforestation and a reliance on the mining business.
One month, one amazing journey
Our campaigns manager Brooke, is one of the Directors of NPC and this April she visited their headquarters in La Esperanza, Amazonas, Peru in order to see first hand the projects that they are working on.
Protecting the critically endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkey and the habitats they occupy, is the main responsibility of NPC project workers.
Brooke followed in their footsteps for one month and took part in the activities that enable them to fulfil this role, which included
- Strenuous hiking through deep, remote forest searching for Critically Endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkeys;
- Attending an annual meeting of coffee growers wishing to support their families while protecting their natural wildlife;
- Hanging out with excited kids while showing nature documentaries, while NPC-made kids films about the primates of the Cloud Forest;
- Working in the tree nursery with native seedlings for reforestation;
- Talking to the women in the local weaving collective, set up to encourage the development of means of income that do not rely on deforestation, hunting or other destructive means.
After participating in this grassroots conservation, where all levels of the community are engaged, Brooke now feels better able to represent NPC and make informed decisions as part of its governing body.
