The Monkey Sanctuary springs to life
The Monkey Sanctuary based in Looe, Cornwall will open to the public this Mothering Sunday, offering all visitors a special entry price of £1 to mark the start of the new season.
The long-established tourist attraction, which is our flagship project, opens from April to October; closing in the winter to make necessary adaptations and to provide a period of respite for the monkeys.
In preparation for the coming season the team have been busy improving the facilities for its long-term residents as well as for its seasonal guests.
Visitors to the attraction will be introduced to a number of new arrivals, including a black-capped capuchin called Lodi, who is soon to arrive from quarantine in Guernsey, as well as a new enclosure for the Sanctuary’s largest primates, the Barbary macaques.
As with every year the public will be able to gain an intimate insight into a working sanctuary, learning about these fascinating animals from the team of expert keepers.
Brooke Aldrich, Campaigns Manager for Wild Futures and long-term keeper at the Monkey Sanctuary said “Spring is a really great time to come and visit us at the Sanctuary, all of our Monkeys are out in force, enjoying their first taste of the warmer weather, foraging for food and exploring their territory.”
The Charity offers a home for life to ex-pet monkeys and promotes low-impact and sustainable living through its community based initiatives focused on the array of wildlife found on site.
“We have some exciting new developments planned within our education facilities this year. With the acquisition of some amazing new technology we’ll be bringing you live camera feeds in our wildlife room and a glimpse of the unexpected with a new motion sensitive camera trap.” said Jenna Barry Education Officer at The Monkey Sanctuary.
“Although the foremost attraction here is the Monkeys, our unique location is one of extraordinary natural beauty and historic significance dating back to the Victorian era. This year we aim to really showcase this to the public and are putting on a variety of interactive events from live role play to treasure hunting, and as always we’ll be hosting a wealth of workshops for you to create a unique souvenir of your visit.”
