Meet the new monkeys!

Four weeks ago we rescued four long-tailed macaques from their lives as pets in the UK primate pet trade, where they were all kept in a cage in a back garden.

These monkeys are an entirely new species for us here at The Monkey Sanctuary which is very exciting but also meant that we had a lot more preparation to do before they arrived. Whilst the rescue plan was underway, the whole team focused on adapting an enclosure for Tom, Floss, Lola and Ben to live in – this meant deep-cleaning, re-roping, gardening, as well as designing and making species-specific items including both furnishings and enrichment. The race was on to make sure that everything was perfect before they arrived!

We made the 5 hour journey to where they were living and visited them that same day to get an idea of the set up and to make some plans for the catch the following day. Then, early the next morning, we safely and calmly got them all into their transportation crates and headed back to Cornwall to start their new life!

The first priority was to get them to the vets for general health check ups. It is vital that we conduct this when they first arrive so that we can make sure that they do not have anything seriously wrong that needs urgent treatment but also anything that they could pass on to the monkeys that already live at The Monkey Sanctuary. It also gives us a chance to vasectomise the males, in line with our non-breeding policy.

So far their results have all come back clear, we are still waiting on some results but they are all settling in really well. We will continue to monitor them closely and make sure that they are receiving the best care possible as they adapt to their new lives here.

Can you help?

Please donate today to help us cover the cost of the rescue and the ongoing care of these new monkeys. It cost over £4,000 to get the monkeys here and safe with us, the vet bills alone were over £3,700.

As always, we rely heavily on you, our wonderful supporters, to help us continue our work and this has especially been the case in the past couple of years. Despite things seemingly going back to ‘normal’, as a charity we are still very much in the throes of the devastating effects of this pandemic and we still need your help. Covid-19 has had a huge, negative financial impact on our charity.

We would be so grateful if you would be able to help us to cover the cost of this rescue and the ongoing care of these beautiful monkeys.

If you are able to help, then please donate here. Thank you so much for being by our sides always, we are forever grateful to you all for helping the monkeys. We are still here because of you. Thank you.
