Frequently Asked Questions
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a government scheme available to charity supporters who pay UK Income or Capital Gains tax. For every pound you earn, you pay 25p (or 20% basic tax rate). By signing up for Gift Aid, your charity can reclaim the tax paid on your donation. For example, a £10 donation allows charities to reclaim £2.50, making Gift Aid a vital source of income for charities.
How do I know if I’ve paid enough tax?
You must have paid at least 25p in income or capital gains tax for every £1 you donate to charity within one financial year. Taxpayers have a tax-exempt threshold, so ensure you’ve paid enough tax to cover all your donations.
For instance, if you donate £100 to charities between 6 April and 5 April (the tax year), you must have paid at least £25 in tax that year. If you need assistance, contact HMRC at 0300 200 3319 (you’ll need your National Insurance number or Self-Assessment Unique Taxpayer Reference) or consult an accountant.
Who can access my Gift Aid information?
Only HMRC and our charity team have access to your data. We do not share your information with other organizations, businesses, or even your family without your permission.
Why is Gift Aid important?
Gift Aid provides essential additional income for charities, adding 25p for every pound donated. For example:
· A £20 donation with Gift Aid adds £5 extra to help support primate welfare.
· A £50 donation adds £12.50.
· A £100 donation adds £25.
What is a Gift Aid declaration form?
A Gift Aid declaration gives HMRC evidence that you’ve permitted us to claim Gift Aid on your donation. You can complete this via a form provided by the charity or online. Ensure you’ve paid enough tax to cover the Gift Aid claim.
Do I need to make a declaration every time I donate?
No, unless you prefer to. Most charities use a single, enduring declaration that covers all eligible donations made in the past four years and future donations. However, if it has been some time since you completed a form, we always welcome updates from you to confirm your ongoing commitment to Gift Aid your donations
How do I know if I’m eligible?
You’re eligible if:
· You voluntarily opt-in to Gift Aid.
· You are a UK taxpayer.
· You’ve paid enough tax.
What does “my own money” mean?
Gift Aid can only be claimed in your name on donations made from your personal funds. It doesn’t apply to:
· Ticket fees for events or performances.
· Purchases from charity shops.
· Competition entries (e.g., Raffles).
· Group or corporate donations.
Why do you need my personal contact details?
HMRC requires your full name and home address to verify your eligibility for Gift Aid as a UK taxpayer.
