Wild Futures Wins Second Place at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards
Wild Futures, the leading primate welfare charity which runs The Monkey Sanctuary, based in Looe Cornwall, won ‘highly commended’ in two categories at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards last Friday. The categories were best medium business and resource management.
The Cornwall Sustainability Awards recognise the work of businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly that are actively trying to improve their own sustainability and that of the Cornish economy as a whole.
Wild Futures is a UK registered charity founded upon almost five decades of experience as a leader in the field of primate welfare and conservation, environmental education, and sustainable practice.
Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary this year carried out a project to measure its carbon footprint with the help of Renewable Energy university student, Kate Simpson. The project enabled the charity to reduce electrical consumption by 50% and has provided the charity with a road map to further reduce its carbon footprint over the coming years.
Hayley Dann, from Wild Futures stated: “We are very proud to win highly commended in both categories. We work tirelessly not only to care for our rescued monkeys but also to ensure that everything we do has a minimal impact on the environment. All our staff and volunteers are passionate about living a sustainable life. A special thanks must be said to Kate Simpson, now Graduate Consultant at Grontmij, who was instrumental in leading us through our carbon footprint project this year. We now look forward to implementing further actions to reduce our environmental impact and we will be telling all our visitors next year about our wonderful awards!”
Cllr Edwina Hannaford Cornwall Council Portfolio holder for Environment, Heritage and Planning, and West Looe Divisional members said: “I am so proud of Wild Futures. Wild Futures and The Monkey Sanctuary just outside Looe is an important asset to Looe’s economy as well as contributing important information and research to the worldwide conservation and animal welfare family. The way they manage their operation is a shining example of sustainability, making the best use of resources while caring for these magnificent primates.”
The awards ceremony took place at Atlantic Hotel in Newquay on Friday 6th December.
