Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary wins Environmental and Wildlife Attraction of the Year
Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary in Cornwall is today celebrating after winning the Environmental and Wildlife Attraction category at the Cornwall Tourism Awards last night.
Now in their 12th year, the prestigious Awards hosted by Visit Cornwall, the Cornwall Development Company tourism service, and sponsored by St Austell Brewery, cover over 19 categories and shine the spotlight on leading tourism businesses who represent the very best the county has to offer visitors.
Malcolm Bell, Head of Visit Cornwall, was at the ceremony to congratulate the winners: “The trophies won in the Cornwall Tourism Awards represent a tremendous amount of work and are a true reflection of the businesses winning them. Rather than being awarded on a first, second and third point scoring basis they are the combination of a number of factors and directly relate to the quality of the individual business – that’s why, in a number of the categories, we have multiple Gold, Silver, Bronze or Commended winners. They should all be immensely proud and I congratulate each and every one of them.”
Councillor Julian German, Portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture, adds: “The Cornwall Tourism Awards are a chance to celebrate the continuous hard-work, investment and passion that goes into the Cornish tourism industry and to shine the light on the businesses that make it all happen. I hope that the Award titles drive the winners forward to an even more successful future and inspire others to follow in their footsteps.”
James Staughton, Managing Director of title sponsors St Austell Brewery commented: “The winner’s roll shows a diverse range of businesses united by quality and excellence. It is an honour to be part of such a market-leading industry and I am proud to help give these businesses the recognition that they deserve.”
Hayley Dann, Head of Income Generation and PR at Wild Futures stated: “We are extremely proud to be awarded gold in the Environmental and Wildlife Attraction category. Our Sanctuary is very much an educational attraction and has been operating for almost 50 years, caring for 160 monkeys in its time. Everything we do is about promoting animal welfare, native wildlife and caring for the environment and so to be recognised in this way by the Cornwall Tourism Awards is absolutely fantastic.”
Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary currently cares for 37 monkeys, mostly ex-pets. All of the rescued monkeys suffer with physical or abnormal behavioural problems and require continuous specialist care.
A visit to the Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary offers a real insight into the daily workings of a rescue and rehabilitation centre. Keepers are out and about giving talks to visitors all day; the onsite activity and wildlife room offers lots of wildlife centred activities to get involved with and special event days are organised throughout the year such as Native Wildlife Day and World Oceans Day. In addition, sensitive habitat management techniques allow for local plants, insects, birds and mammals to thrive in the Sanctuary’s extensive grounds which are home to rare species such as the Pearl bordered fritillary butterfly and the endangered lesser horseshoe bat.
Wild Futures’ Monkey Sanctuary is currently closed for the winter season but reopens for a special Christmas Open Day on Sunday 15th December 2013 with a special entrance fee of just £1.
