New Dates Announced for Wild Futures’ Haunted Sleepovers at Bodmin Jail
Following the success of two Haunted Sleepover events in 2012, leading primate welfare charity Wild Futures has launched two new dates for the scary challenge this year: 8th February and 8th March. On each event, 25 daring individuals will prepare to spend the night in one of the most notoriously haunted venues in the UK: Bodmin Jail. The aim of this spine-tingling challenge is not only to test the nerves of those brave enough to sign up, but more importantly to raise vital funds for Wild Futures.
Wild Futures is a charity with almost five decades of experience as a leader of primate welfare, environmental education and sustainable practice. Wild Futures’ flagship project is The Monkey Sanctuary in Cornwall; a rescue and rehabilitation centre for ex-pet monkeys. The Sanctuary has an international reputation for the quality of care and enclosure design and is the first and only accredited Sanctuary in Europe.
Bodmin Jail was built in 1779 and over the course of 150 operational years, saw over 50 public hangings. Looming over Bodmin town, even the sinister exterior of the jail emits an air of desolation and turmoil. The gloominess intensifies as you step inside the cold, dark cells within the jail; each with its own history of anguish and pain. Bodmin Jail makes for a chilling visit on a bright sunny day – let alone in the darkness of the night.
Led by experienced paranormalist Mark Rablin, the night’s spooky activities will begin at 11.00pm on each night and run through to 7.00am the following morning. Participants will receive a tour of the Jail upon arrival with the lights on, after which all lights will be extinguished and the paranormal activities will begin. The event will try the nerves of participants throughout, with highlights including an ‘Unlucky Lottery’, the loser of which will be sentenced to spend 20 minutes in one of the basement cells alone!
Katie Brydges, Events and Community Fundraiser at Wild Futures states: “This event was extremely popular last year with 50 participants who took part and raised nearly £4,000. Each Haunted Sleepover event certainly tests the nerves of participants with a range of spooky activities and storytelling throughout the night! Due to the amount of interest we received last year, we would urge anyone who is interested this time round to sign up quickly. We have been greatly impacted by the dreadful weather and storms of recent months and so the funds raised from the Haunted Sleepovers are vital to ensure that our rescue and rehabilitation work at our Sanctuary can continue.”
A Haunted Sleepover participant from last year Gemma Lawrence stated: “The Haunted Sleepover was an amazing, exciting challenge. I was certainly apprehensive about taking part but I thoroughly enjoyed the event and felt like I could achieve anything afterwards! I would urge anyone that fancies a different kind of challenge to take part – it’s such fun!”
