Wild Futures Haunted Sleepover a scary success!

Over the past two weeks, more than 50 daring individuals have completed the spine-tingling challenge of spending a night in one of the most notoriously haunted venues in the UK: Bodmin Jail. The purpose of these chilling events was not only to test the nerves of the participants, but also to raise vital funds for leading primate charity, Wild Futures.

Wild Futures is a charity with almost five decades of experience as a leader of primate welfare, environmental education and sustainable practice. Wild Futures’ flagship project is The Monkey Sanctuary in Cornwall; a rescue and rehabilitation centre for ex-pet monkeys. The Sanctuary has an international reputation for the quality of care and enclosure design and is the only accredited Sanctuary in Europe.

Bodmin Jail was built in 1779 and over the course of 150 operational years, saw over 50 public hangings. Looming over Bodmin town, even the sinister exterior of the jail emits an air of desolation and turmoil. The gloominess intensifies as you step inside the cold, dark cells within the jail; each with its own history of anguish and pain. Bodmin Jail makes for a chilling visit on a bright sunny day – let alone in the darkness of the night.

Led by paranormalist Mark Rablin, the spooky activities ran throughout the night, finishing up with a much needed, hearty cooked breakfast on the Saturday morning! Table tipping, glass pushing and the ‘Unlucky Lottery’ were a few of the night’s highlights, and participants were not disappointed with the ‘activity’ within the Jail.

Katie Brydges, Events and Community Fundraiser at Wild Futures states: “Our recent Haunted Sleepover events were a huge success. Everybody had a great night and the paranormal team at the Jail were fantastic.  Participants have raised over £4,000 from our two recent sleepovers, which will help us to rescue more monkeys. There are many monkeys kept as pets in the UK for whom winter is a harsh and miserable time. We are being asked weekly at the moment to rescue more monkeys and need more funds to do, so we are hugely grateful to all the participants who raised sponsorship for us.”
